Syvalion (Super Famicom, 1992)

Developed by Taito, released on July 24, 1992 in Japan. A dragon-shaped shooter with unique twisting movement.

Syvalion Super Famicom
Syvalion’s dragon-like ship twists fluidly across the screen.

Gameplay

Unlike most vertical or horizontal shooters, Syvalion places you in control of a mechanical dragon that constantly “slithers” across the screen. You guide its head, while the tail follows with a natural curve. This creates both an offensive weapon and a challenge in maneuvering through tight spaces.

What Makes It Unique

  • Dragon-like ship movement — fresh compared to standard spacecraft shooters.
  • Energy-based attacks, where your dragon’s body itself is the weapon.
  • Distinct arcade origins faithfully carried into the Super Famicom port.

Release Notes

Syvalion for Super Famicom was published by Toshiba EMI. It saw release in Japan and later in Europe, but **never in North America**, making it a particularly intriguing title for collectors.

Collector’s View

Because the game never reached North America, it holds special value for international collectors. The Super Famicom cartridge is relatively accessible in Japan, but boxed copies in good condition are increasingly sought after overseas.
